I am very sorry to say that the hate crimes continue in Armenia

Sergey GABRIELYAN

NGNGO President

It was just yesterday that we all were jointly fighting for velvet revolution without differing the fighters by their sex, race, sexual orientation, gender identity or other social status. We were fighting to have a free and democratic country, but today, it seems, nothing has changed. the propaganda machine of the previous government to hate and discriminate those who are different in the society is still being used the witness of which we became again on August 3 when a group of people in Shurnukh village attacked 9 youngsters.

I still hope that we will have a rule of law soon and fair court trials and verdicts will prevail. The perpetrators will carry their deserved punishment according to the law and the innocents will be released. People will understand that the country is not mine, yours, thus, everyone has the right to live in Armenia and everyone is equal under the law. We also continue to use our skills and potential to promote protection of human rights, realization of basic human rights and freedoms and formation of the narrative and culture of equality.

With this regard I would like to link to the articles 6 and 9 of the International Covenant on civil and political rights:

Article 6

1. Every human being has the inherent right to life. This right shall be protected by law.

Article 9

1. Everyone has the right to liberty and security of person.

As a conclusion I call the new government of new Armenia to implement the positive obligations to their citizens in order to exclude any type of discrimination and I want to quote the UN Committee against torture. “All the states should protect All Persons from Being Subjected to Torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity.
